Talking Newspaper Talks to Real Radio - 20 Jul 2004

Karen McPhee (36) a volunteer from Bishopbriggs with Cue and Review Recording Service can this week (week beginning 19th July 2004) be heard urging listeners to Real Radio to sign up to the range of talking newspapers and magazines produced by the Bishopbriggs based charity.

The volunteers from throughout Glasgow who transcribe print newspapers into audio for the reading impaired, are somewhat fed up that despite many attempts to get more listeners through newspaper articles and contact with local authorities it is still only a minority of blind people who have heard that TV listings from the Radio Times and The Herald newspaper are just two of the 20 titles produced by the Scottish charity and available through their membership fee of just 50p per week.

In the coming weeks the charity hopes to reach out to radio stations to try to contact visually impaired people in the medium that they find easiest to access ? audio.

In talking with Dougie Jackson of Real Radio, Alastair McPhee Managing Editor of Cue and Review Recording Service said;

"I fail to understand why, despite all the legislation in place to ensure visually impaired people can get access to printed material, public and private sector organisations refuse to publicise in audio (rather than the small print at the back of documents) what materials they produce. Blind people pay Council Tax and have money to spend. Surely it makes sense to let them know what is available. "

Cue and Review is once again encouraging local authorities to take up the charity???s offer to produce an information tape to pass onto all blind and partially sighted clients in each local authority area. The charity will be delighted to include on the tape other information about local services for visually impaired people or for the public in general. Telephone 0141-563-0306 to speak to Alastair if you would like to take this offer up.

Alastair and the team are also keen to hear from people who can help publicise the service through their own publications and would encourage them to email him on alastairmcphee@cueandreview.org.uk.
